For the construction of the Bern Loetschberg – Simplon railway (BLS) southern ramp large quantities of hard rock was needed to build up the viaducts and retaining walls. Therefore the existing quarry in Riedgarto was enlarged. After the completion of the railway the extracting was stopped and the quarry lapsed with widely audible roaring.
