Sources of the Oeschi River

The Lake Oeschinen was dammed after the last ice age by a massive landslide. The barrier of boulders with their crevices and cavities are the reason for the drains off in the underground of the Lake Oeschinen. The Öschi brook reappears in multiple sources in the range of 20-50 meters beneath the lake surface and unites, especially during periods of snow melting, to a considerable river. It ensures both the drinking water supply of Kandersteg, and is used as well for generating electrical energy.
