Weathering in the limestone at the Oberbärgli

The rocks around the Oeschinen lake consist mainly of sediments from the primordial ocean Tethys, which covered Switzerland millions of years ago. Unlike the hard plutonic rocks like basalt, granite or gneiss, the rain, wind and weather leave their mark on the smoother limestone. Such traces of erosion can be clearly seen at this location at the rock steps between Oberbärgli and Underbärgli.
