Kilometer 36 of the Jungfrau Marathon

The legs are heavy and burning, the breath goes jerky, sweat is dripping, the beautiful panorama is blurring smoothly: that’s how the participants feel during the Jungrau Marathon, who have already completed 36 km and still have 6,2 km in front of them. The marathon was held for the first time in 1993. Today the event is considered among runners as one of the most beautiful and famous mountain marathons worldwide. The 42,2 km long race course starts in the centre of Interlaken and climbs 1.823 m in elevation to the Kleine Scheidegg. Every year approximately 4.000 runners are participating. The Jungfrau Marathon is one of the sports events that have become an important part of the tourism development in the Lauterbrunnen valley in the last century. Since the tourism of the early period the needs of the visitors have changed. While the very first visitors in the 18th  century, enjoyed especially the landscape experience and the recreation, gradually the desire for active sports adventures enhanced. With a lot of pioneering spirit and sense of innovation such offers were created in the Lauterbrunnen valley to satisfy the new requests. Today the Jungfrau Marathon attracts many runners and spectators to the valley.
